Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya Mumbai Indians IPL 2027 Captaincy
Mumbai Indians have reportedly shut down rumours of Rohit Sharma returning as captain for IPL 2027.
According to reports, franchise sources said there is no truth to these reports. They also clarified that no discussions about the captaincy for the next season have taken place yet.
Despite, there is a bigger update on Hardik Pandya. MI are exploring the possibility of trading their current captain and are open to offers from other franchises. The sources added that no suitable deal has been found so far.
If Hardik leaves, Mumbai Indians have other options to lead the team. Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Mitchell Santner are among the names in contention.
Suryakumar recently led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, while Tilak is India’s T20I vice captain. Santner also has captaincy experience with New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles before Hardik replaced him as captain ahead of IPL 2024.
Hardik returned to MI through a trade from Gujarat Titans, having previously led GT to the IPL title in 2022.
MI have struggled for consistency under Hardik. They finished last in IPL 2024, reached Qualifier 2 in 2025 and ended the 2026 season in ninth place.
For now, Rohit’s return as captain is not confirmed, and MI have yet to find a suitable deal for Hardik. The franchise’s captaincy plans for IPL 2027 remain unclear.
