The Asia Cup has seen intense cricketing action, but now all eyes are on Pakistan for off-field drama. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly unhappy with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over misconduct and violation of tournament rules.
ICC Raises Concerns Over PMOA Breaches
The issue began when Pakistan delayed their match against UAE to protest match referee Andy Pycroft’s involvement. He had earlier been part of a handshake controversy during their match against India.
Email from ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta
ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta reportedly sent an email to PCB. He pointed out repeated rule violations in the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA), which is a strictly controlled zone.
Media Manager Filmed Restricted Meeting
PCB’s media manager Naeem Gillani was allowed into a private meeting involving Pycroft, captain Salman Ali Agha, and coach Mike Hesson. Filming was done despite clear rules banning phones and cameras in the PMOA.
Misleading Social Media Release
PCB later released the clip claiming Pycroft apologised. However, the ICC clarified that he only expressed regret over a misunderstanding. The release caused further confusion.
Handshake Row Triggered the Tension
The controversy started after Pakistan’s loss to India. Indian players did not shake hands, which led PCB to blame Pycroft. As a result, they initially refused to leave their hotel for the UAE match.
ICC Allowed Filming Under Pressure
The ICC organised a meeting to resolve the issue. PCB insisted on filming it despite warnings that it violated PMOA rules. ICC allowed it reluctantly, fearing that Pakistan might pull out of the match.
Breach Raises Serious Questions
This incident reveals communication gaps and disregard for regulations by PCB. Filming a private meeting and sharing it publicly undermines the authority of match officials.
Possible Action Against PCB
The ICC may now take disciplinary action. Penalties could include fines. As the Super 4 stage approaches, this off-field controversy could distract the team.
Pakistan Must Refocus for India Clash
Despite the tension, Pakistan beat UAE. However, the real challenge lies ahead against India. PCB must manage both the game and the growing controversy carefully.
