IPL: RCB’s Plan Backfires, Tribute Faces Backlash

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru have announced tribute measures ahead of IPL 2026. These steps are meant to honour the 11 fans who lost their lives in the M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede last year.

As part of the tribute, the team will keep 11 seats permanently empty. Players will wear jersey number 11 during practice sessions. A memorial plaque will also be installed at the stadium.

RCB has also introduced several safety upgrades. These include AI powered CCTV systems, improved entry and exit points, baggage scanners, and better crowd management protocols.

The aim of these changes is to improve fan safety during matches. The team wants to ensure a more secure and organised environment at the stadium. These steps come after last year’s tragic incident.

Despite these efforts, the response from fans has been mixed. Some people appreciated the tribute. Others felt that more practical support could have been offered to affected families.

A social media user suggested financial assistance instead of symbolic gestures. They pointed out that direct compensation could have helped families more effectively. This view has gained attention online.

Some fans also questioned gestures like keeping seats empty. Wearing black armbands during practice was also debated. Many believe such actions, while respectful, may not provide real support.

RCB is set to play five home matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The team will also host two matches in Raipur during IPL 2026. This marks their return to a full home schedule.

The upcoming season will be closely watched. It is the first full home campaign since the incident. Enhanced safety measures are expected to play a key role.

Overall, the situation highlights an ongoing debate. It reflects the balance between symbolic tribute and meaningful support. The discussion continues among fans and observers.
