Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retained their places in India’s ODI squad for the West Indies series, but questions over their 2027 World Cup future are still not over.
With the WC now less than a year away, former India star Yuvraj Singh has sent a clear message to the selectors.
Yuvraj believes India cannot afford to keep making major changes as the 2027 World Cup gets closer.
He wants the selectors to identify a core group of 16-20 players and give them enough opportunities before the WC.
“They need to focus on building the same team to play in a year’s time, because you don’t want to make big changes at the last moment,” Yuvraj said.
His message comes at a time when Rohit Sharma’s place in India’s 2027 World Cup plans remains a major talking point.
The 39 year old has retained his ODI spot for the West Indies series after scoring a century at Lord’s against England earlier this year, but he has himself said that October 2027 is still far away.
Yuvraj also pointed to India’s past World Cup struggles when the team made major changes at the last moment.
He said the players chosen for the World Cup should be backed whether they succeed or fail in the build up to the tournament.
The 2011 World Cup winner also highlighted the importance of game time, especially with fewer ODIs being played compared to T20 matches.
India’s next ODI assignment is against the West Indies, with the three match series beginning on September 27.
For the selectors, the message is simple identify the core early and give them enough cricket before the World Cup.
