Former India opener Aakash Chopra has raised concerns over the continued exclusion of Ruturaj Gaikwad from national and India A squads. Despite being in good form, Gaikwad has not received any call-ups recently, even though he played a key role in India’s gold medal win at the 2022 Asian Games.
No Spot for Asia Cup or Australia A Tour
Ruturaj Gaikwad was not picked in India’s squad or as a reserve for the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. He was also left out of the India A teams for both the multi-day and one-day series against Australia A.
Chopra Questions the Omission
Speaking on the issue, Aakash Chopra said, “It’s a good question, and the question is very important because he has scored runs. I agree he was injured for some time. But he scored runs in the Duleep Trophy as well, where Rajat Patidar also scored runs.”
He pointed out that Gaikwad, along with other successful IPL captains, performed well in domestic cricket too.
Strong Past Performances
Chopra highlighted Gaikwad’s century against Australia in Guwahati and praised his technique. He reminded fans that Gaikwad led the Indian side to gold at the 2022 Asian Games, proving his leadership and batting capabilities.
Unfortunate England Tour
He also referred to a past incident when Gaikwad was picked for India A’s tour of England but didn’t play due to an elbow fracture. Chopra expressed disappointment over Gaikwad being overlooked again despite past form and fitness.
Consistent Domestic Record
At 28, Gaikwad has an impressive domestic record. He has scored 2,832 runs at an average of 43.56 in 39 first-class matches. In List A cricket, he has 4,324 runs at an average of 56.15 from 83 innings.
Chopra’s Final Thoughts
Chopra concluded, “His name should be there somewhere or other. He is too good a player to actually miss out completely from everything. That is what I feel.”
