GG Special Quota Fail? Star Player in Trouble?

Shubman Gill, India’s vice-captain, is under fire after another disappointing performance in the 2025 Asia Cup. In the final group stage match against Oman, he was dismissed for just 5 runs, sparking fresh concerns over his form and consistency.

Social Media Slams Gill and Gambhir

Fans on social media are criticising not only Gill but also head coach Gautam Gambhir for continuing to back him. The chatter is growing louder as many feel his place in the team is not being earned through performance.

Poor Asia Cup Run So Far

Gill has managed just 35 runs across three group stage games. His 20 not out against UAE and 10 against Pakistan were the only brief positives. Against Oman, India scored 188/8 with Sanju Samson leading with 56 runs off 45 balls. Tilak Varma added a valuable 29 off 18 deliveries.

Oman Put Up a Strong Fight

Oman gave India a serious challenge in the chase. Their openers Jatinder Singh and Amir Kaleem stitched a 56-run stand. Kaleem’s 64 off 46 and Hammad Mirza’s quickfire 51 off 33 kept the pressure on. But India held their nerve and won by 21 runs, restricting Oman to 167.

Gill’s Struggles on Testing Pitches

Gill’s poor form is more evident on bowler-friendly pitches and in high-pressure matches. While he has done well on flat tracks, he has failed to adjust when conditions demand technique and patience.

High Hopes, Low Returns

His return to the top order, replacing Sanju Samson, came with high hopes. However, his form hasn’t lived up to the expectations. Fans have noted that he appears out of sync during big games, and comparisons to Virat Kohli have only underlined the gap in match temperament.

Accusations of Favouritism

Social media has been harsh, with many alleging that Gill is in the squad due to Gautam Gambhir’s support. His role as vice-captain is now being questioned, as doubts rise over whether he can deliver in crucial knockout fixtures.

India Must Not Slip Up

Though India managed to win, the close contest against Oman was a reminder that they can’t afford poor performances from key players. Every match counts if they aim to lift the Asia Cup trophy.

Wake-Up Call for Shubman Gill

Gill’s ongoing struggles serve as a warning. To justify his spot and vice-captaincy, he must return to form quickly. With the knockouts approaching, all eyes will be on whether he can rise to the occasion or not.
