India has taken a serious hit before the South Africa series as Shubman Gill has been told to stop playing white ball cricket for now. What seemed like a small neck spasm during the first Test in Kolkata has turned into a larger setback.
Gill’s condition worsens
Gill walked off after facing three balls at Eden Gardens and did not bat again. He was taken to a private hospital, released after the match and then travelled with the team to Guwahati. He did not find a place in the playing XI there either.
Tests and medical advice
The BCCI said he will undergo more tests in Mumbai. Reports say his neck problem has not improved even after an injection. Specialists have suggested a longer recovery time to avoid further strain.
Doctors rule him out
Dr. Abhay Nene has already ruled him out of the ODI series. An internal mail to chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Gill needs rest before starting rehab or skill work. Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala has also asked for an extended recovery period, which puts his T20I availability in doubt.
Leadership change needed
Gill was named the ODI captain for the season, so this setback is even bigger. With vice captain Shreyas Iyer also injured, the selectors now need a quick replacement to lead the team in the coming matches.
Options for captaincy
KL Rahul appears to be the front runner for the role while Rishabh Pant is also being considered. The selection meeting on November 23 will now play a key role in finalising the leadership.
India move ahead without Gill
Gill remains under strict medical supervision. His return will depend on how well he recovers in the coming weeks. For now, India must continue without him and prepare for South Africa with a new captain and a new approach.
