2027 WC: Gavaskar Signals Trouble For Big Stars?

Indian cricket is stepping into a new era as Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as ODI captain. While Rohit will continue to play, this move shows that the focus has shifted towards building a young leadership core for the 2027 World Cup.

Gavaskar Backs the Move but Warns of Changes

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has supported this decision but advised fans to expect more changes ahead. He said the BCCI’s decision is practical and prepares India for the future, especially with limited ODIs in the upcoming international calendar.

Rohit’s Limited ODI Opportunities

The BCCI announced Gill’s promotion after a meeting led by selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, calling it a forward-looking step. Gavaskar said Rohit Sharma’s limited ODI schedule could hurt his preparation, as India now mostly plays Tests and T20Is.

“If Rohit plays only five to seven ODIs a year, he won’t get enough match practice for a major tournament like the World Cup,” Gavaskar said. “The team comes first. Even Rohit agrees that if you’re thinking long-term, a young captain must be ready.”

Gavaskar Hints at More Changes

Gavaskar also hinted that more senior players could face uncertainty if they’re not committed to the format. “If you can’t confirm your availability for the next two years, expect more tough calls,” he said. He added that players focusing only on ODIs should consider playing domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay sharp.

BCCI’s Long-Term Plan for 2027

This move signals that the BCCI is looking ahead, not back. By promoting Shubman Gill, the board wants to test his leadership under pressure and build a balanced team before the 2027 World Cup. Players must stay active and dedicated to retain their spots.

The Road Ahead for Team India

Rohit Sharma leaves behind a strong captaincy record, but the focus now shifts to Shubman Gill and India’s next generation. With the right mix of experience and youth, the team aims to enter the 2027 World Cup ready to compete — and win.
