SRH weighs IPL 2027 pace attack options.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have started making changes to their squad ahead of IPL 2027, but their latest trade with Chennai Super Kings could be just the beginning.
The franchise has strengthened its pace attack by bringing in Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis. The move also raises questions about the future of some of their existing players.
With Pat Cummins availability for the next season uncertain, SRH could have some difficult decisions to make before finalising their retention list.
Former Hyderabad batter Tirumalasetti Suman believes Cummins availability was one of the major factors behind the deal.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Tirumalasetti Suman said the Australian captain’s chances of playing IPL 2027 are 50-50.
He also explained that Khaleel’s ability to bowl with the new ball and Ellis experience in the middle and death overs could help SRH manage their bowling requirements.
One player who could struggle to retain his place is Dilshan Madushanka. The Sri Lankan left arm pacer joined Hyderabad as an injury replacement for Brydon Carse but got only one opportunity in IPL 2026. He picked up one wicket while conceding 36 runs against Delhi Capitals.
With Khaleel and Ellis now part of the squad, SRH have more options in their pace attack, which could make Dilshan Madushanka expendable.
Harshal Patel is another name to watch. The 35 year old played only five matches last season and failed to take a wicket.
Having spent Rs 8 crore on him, the franchise could consider using that amount to bring in a different option at the auction.
Pat Cummins is the biggest name who could face an uncertain future at Hyderabad. SRH retained him for Rs 18 crore, but Australia’s international schedule in 2027 could make his availability a concern.
The team will have to consider his commitments during the Ashes and the ODI World Cup before deciding whether to retain him.
Although releasing Cummins would free up a significant amount for the mini auction, it would also mean losing an experienced fast bowler and their captain. His relationship with head coach Daniel Vettori could also play a role in the final decision.
SRH have already taken the first step towards improving their bowling attack, but their retention decisions could determine how strong the squad looks next season.
Madushanka and Harshal Patel could be among the players released, while Cummins remains the biggest question mark.
Hyderabad may not want to lose their captain, but spending Rs 18 crore on a player whose availability is uncertain could force them to reconsider their plans.
The franchise will have to decide whether to continue with Cummins or use that money to build a more settled squad for IPL 2027.
