Suryakumar Yadav has finally opened up about being overlooked for the Mumbai Indians captaincy. Before IPL 2024, Mumbai made a major change by replacing Rohit Sharma with Hardik Pandya, who returned from Gujarat Titans to lead the side. The decision split fans, many of whom believed Suryakumar was the ideal choice.
Suryakumar on IPL Captaincy
In an interview with News24 on October 14, Suryakumar said he never saw himself as an IPL captain. Even when he led India’s T20 team or performed well in the league, he didn’t see captaincy as necessary.
“It’s not written anywhere that if you’re India’s captain, you must lead your IPL or state team,” he said. “When I play under others, I still learn a lot.”
Focus on Batting, Not Titles
The 35-year-old said he is comfortable playing under another captain and prefers to focus on his batting. He believes leadership is not about position but about contributing to the team’s success.
Other IPL Offers
Suryakumar also revealed that three to four IPL teams had offered him captaincy roles. He considered them but chose to stay with Mumbai Indians.
“If I were 27 or 28, maybe I would have moved to build a legacy. But at 34, it didn’t make sense,” he said. “If you lead for years, win trophies, and stay loyal, that’s how you create a legacy.”
Loyalty Over Leadership
He added that staying in Mumbai feels right at this stage of his career, especially with his family becoming a priority. His decision reflects calmness and clarity. While he has led India’s T20 team, his focus remains on contributing as a senior MI player.
Mixed Fan Reactions
Fans reacted strongly after the interview went viral. Some praised his honesty and team-first mindset, while others mocked him saying, “Run toh banaye jaate nahi, captaincy chahiye.” Still, most agreed that his mature view of leadership deserves respect.
A True Team Player
With 4,311 runs in 166 IPL matches and a strike rate of 148.65, Suryakumar remains one of Mumbai’s most reliable match-winners. He may not wear the captain’s armband, but his calmness, experience, and loyalty make him one of MI’s biggest assets on and off the field.
