The heated on-field moment between Virat Kohli and Travis Head during the IPL 2026 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad has now created controversy beyond the cricket field. The incident has triggered intense debate across social media platforms.
Travis Head’s wife Jessica revealed that she and her family received abusive messages online after the match. According to her, the trolling became severe following the on-field exchange between Kohli and Head during the May 22 encounter. The situation reportedly caused significant mental stress for the family.
Jessica said the online abuse reminded her of the backlash she faced after the 2023 ODI World Cup final. In that match, Travis Head scored a match-winning century as Australia national cricket team defeated India national cricket team in Ahmedabad. She explained that the memories of that phase returned after the latest controversy.
Speaking to Australian media outlet The Advertiser, Jessica said even her close friends and family members became targets of online abuse. She revealed that she woke up to several disturbing messages on social media. Jessica described the experience as emotionally exhausting and deeply upsetting.
She also raised concerns about growing toxicity on social media in modern sports culture. According to her, many fans forget that cricketers and their families are ordinary people away from the game. Jessica added that while rivalry and emotions are natural in cricket, personal attacks should never cross boundaries.
The tension between Kohli and Head reportedly started during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling innings. Kohli appeared visibly aggressive on the field and was seen gesturing towards Head at mid wicket. Later in the match, both players were involved in another brief verbal exchange while changing field positions.
Head eventually made an important contribution in the game by dismissing RCB captain Rajat Patidar during the death overs. After the match, another incident gained attention online when a viral clip led fans to believe Kohli avoided shaking hands with Head during the post-match greetings.
While Kohli was seen greeting players like Pat Cummins, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, many social media users claimed he skipped Head completely. The clip quickly went viral and divided opinions among cricket fans online.
Some fans defended Kohli’s aggressive attitude as part of competitive cricket, while others criticised the increasing toxicity among fan groups. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan later reacted to the controversy and stated that such heated moments are common in high-pressure matches.
However, the abuse directed towards players’ families has once again sparked serious discussion about fan behaviour and online hate in cricket. Many fans and experts believe stronger awareness is needed to maintain healthy sporting culture on social media platforms.
