DC’s Nightmare Night: Loss and Captain Fined

Delhi Capitals endured a difficult night in WPL 2026 after losing a crucial match against Gujarat Giants. The loss was compounded by a slow over rate penalty, adding to the team’s troubles.

Team captain Jemimah Rodrigues was fined Rs 12 lakh for the offence. The penalty was imposed during Match 17, which was played in Vadodara.

The match held major importance in the playoff race. Both Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Giants were tied on six points before the game. Gujarat Giants secured the win to stay ahead in the standings.

As per WPL regulations, this was Jemimah Rodrigues’ first slow over rate offence of the season. The fine added to what turned out to be a disappointing night for Delhi Capitals.

The defeat has complicated Delhi’s qualification chances. They now need to win their final league match against UP Warriorz to remain in contention for the playoffs.

Batting first, Gujarat Giants posted 174/9. Beth Mooney scored 58, while Anushka Sharma contributed 39. For Delhi, Sree Charani claimed four wickets for 31 runs.

Delhi’s chase began poorly, with the side slipping to 100/6. Niki Prasad and Sneh Rana added crucial runs to keep hopes alive.

Needing nine runs in the final over, Delhi failed to finish the job. Sophie Devine bowled the final over, took two wickets, and ended with figures of 4/37. Gujarat Giants won by three wickets and moved to second place in the points table.
