Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered a strong reminder of his quality after being dropped from India’s T20 squad. He responded with a brilliant hundred for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, underlining his ability to dominate under pressure.
Opening the batting against Haryana in Pune, Jaiswal chased a massive target of 235 with ease. He brought up his maiden SMAT century in just 48 balls, turning a challenging chase into a comfortable one.
It was only his second match of the tournament, yet he took control from the start. Mumbai completed the chase in 17.3 overs, registering the second-highest successful chase in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy history.
The innings featured 16 fours and only one six. The knock highlighted timing, placement, and control rather than brute force, reflecting Jaiswal’s growing maturity in the shortest format.
This was his fourth T20 century and his first for Mumbai in the tournament. Earlier, he had scored a T20I hundred for India against Nepal and two centuries for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Sarfaraz Khan supported the chase with a rapid 64 off 25 balls.
Jaiswal has been out of India’s T20 plans for over a year. He last played a T20I in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, despite being part of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad as a backup opener.
In Tests, his position remains secure, with seven centuries already to his name. He also scored his maiden ODI hundred in Visakhapatnam against South Africa, helping India win the ODI series and entering an elite list of Indian batters.
Jaiswal has spoken about his ambition to play in the 2026 T20 World Cup at home. With Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Sanju Samson ahead in the pecking order, performances like this continue to strengthen his case.
