Anupama Parameswaran’s film Lockdown, directed by AR Jeeva and produced by Lyca Productions, was scheduled for a worldwide release on December 12th. However, due to unresolved issues, the film will not release tomorrow and has been postponed again. This adds to the ongoing delays troubling Kollywood.
Lyca Productions, which has been struggling after the poor performances of Indian 2 and Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, had placed strong hopes on Lockdown and on Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut Sigma. Many felt Lockdown could have gained an advantage at the box office, as no major films were releasing in the coming weeks.
The trailer did not create strong buzz, and many viewers were unaware of the release date. Still, the film’s selection for the 56th International Film Festival of India in Goa led critics to believe that its content might resonate with the audience. Yet, repeated postponements continue to affect expectations.
Trade circles say these delays may reduce audience interest by the time Lockdown eventually arrives in theatres. After postponements for Pradeep Ranganathan’s Love Insurance Kompany and Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar, Lockdown is now the latest Kollywood release pushed forward this month.
With back to back delays, trade experts express disappointment, noting that December usually brings at least one strong theatrical performer in Kollywood. This year, they say Padayappa remains the only title with potential for a solid run. For now, Lyca Productions has not announced a new release date for Lockdown, and it remains to be seen when it will finally hit theatres and how it will fare.
