Can Rajini & Karthi Break Tamil Cinema’s Curse?

Kollywood has never had much success with sequels. Unlike other industries, sequels in Tamil cinema are rare, and even when attempted, they have not yielded great results.

For example, Robo 2.0, the sequel to Robo, was made on a massive budget by Shankar, but it did not perform as expected.

Similarly, Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan was released in two parts, but the second installment couldn’t replicate the success of the first. Shankar also made Indian 2, a sequel to Bharateeyudu, but it turned out to be a disaster of epic proportions.

Given these loss-makers, Indian 3 has reportedly been almost shelved. Overall, Kollywood’s history with sequels has been disappointing.

However, things might change now. Nelson Dilipkumar is working on Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, the sequel to the blockbuster Jailer. Similarly, Thani Oruvan 2 is in development.

Karthi’s Sardar 2 is also in the making, while Vishal has already completed shooting for Detective 2. Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for his Lokesh Cinematic Universe, is set to begin Kaithi 2.

Expectations for these sequels are sky-high because the first installments were massive hits. However, the industry’s track record with sequels and past failures still looms large.

It remains to be seen whether these upcoming films can break the jinx or fall into the same trap.
