Is Kaithi 2 Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Safest Bailout?

Following Vijay’s Leo, Lokesh Kanagaraj returned with Coolie starring Rajinikanth in the lead. Released in theatres on August 14, the film received mixed responses from both audiences and critics, leaving the celebrated director in a challenging position.

Lokesh Kanagaraj is among the most sought-after filmmakers in Indian cinema, with his unique style of storytelling earning him a massive following. However, his last two outings, Leo and Coolie, have not met the high expectations that fans usually associate with him.

While Leo managed to be accepted as an above-average movie, Coolie was widely criticised. Some reviewers and fans even called it his weakest work, with harsh comments on social media describing its screenplay and characters as poorly written, affecting the director’s credibility.

Several Kollywood trackers have attempted to defend the film, saying Coolie is not entirely bad but rather an ordinary commercial entertainer. Still, coming from Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for raising the bar in Tamil cinema, many viewers found it hard to accept such mediocrity.

His next project, Kaithi 2 with Karthi, is already one of the most awaited films. Falling under the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, the sequel carries immense expectations. Despite Karthi being considered a tier-2 actor, the film is seen as central to the LCU’s future storyline.

Reports suggest Kaithi 2 will be made on a grand scale, with pre-production work already underway. However, filming will take some time to start, as Lokesh Kanagaraj is currently acting in a lead role for Arun Matheswaran’s upcoming directorial project.

The real question is whether Kaithi 2 will help Lokesh Kanagaraj reclaim his stronghold in Tamil cinema. With the weight of his recent setbacks and the anticipation surrounding the sequel, all eyes are now on how this ambitious film will unfold.
