After the critically acclaimed Meiyazhagan, director C Prem Kumar has begun pre-production for 96 Part 2, the sequel to one of Kollywood’s most loved romantic films. But his recent comments about Meiyazhagan have sparked heated discussion online.
In an interview, Prem Kumar said that if Meiyazhagan had been made in Malayalam, Tamil audiences would have celebrated it. He added that the film’s theatrical revenue was lower than expected, blaming negative reviews for affecting its run.
He further claimed that reviewers are a bigger threat to the film industry than piracy and stressed that he has no fear of reviewers, which is why he spoke openly about the issue.
His remarks drew strong reactions on social media. Many pointed out that most critics had praised Meiyazhagan as one of the best films of the year and audiences had also celebrated it. Only a few viewers had felt the film was lengthy, but after edits, responses became overwhelmingly positive.
Despite this, Prem Kumar continues to link the film’s average box office performance to negative reviews. Some also accuse him of being unfair to Tamil audiences by repeatedly saying the film would have been a blockbuster in Malayalam.
Fans now urge him not to criticise Tamil audiences, reminding him that Kollywood viewers have supported him since 96. They worry his repeated statements could create unnecessary backlash against him. Meanwhile, his comments have gone viral and sparked wide debate.
