Dragon Director’s Missed Chance: Why Rajinikanth Said No

Following the blockbuster success of Dragon, director Ashwath Marimuthu has begun pre production work on his next film with Simbu. The project is tentatively titled STR 51, and shooting is expected to begin soon as plans move ahead.

Amid this, Ashwath Marimuthu revealed in a recent interview that he was once considered to direct Rajinikanth’s Thalaivar 173. This revelation has quickly gone viral on social media and sparked strong reactions from fans and industry watchers.

He shared that while working on STR 51, he faced a phase of writer’s block. During this period, he developed a new script and later got the chance to narrate it to Rajinikanth through Raaj Kamal Films International.

During the narration, Rajinikanth reportedly remained fully engaged until the interval portion. Ashwath said the actor even skipped lunch while listening. After the session, Rajinikanth appreciated the script and discussions about villain casting also took place.

Despite positive feedback, the project did not move forward due to certain circumstances. Ashwath Marimuthu, however, remains confident about collaborating with either Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan in the future on a suitable project.

He was among several directors considered for Thalaivar 173, alongside Cibi Chakaravarthi and Ramkumar. After hearing multiple narrations, Rajinikanth eventually finalised Cibi Chakaravarthi’s script for the film.

The revelation has triggered mixed reactions online. Many social media users feel Ashwath Marimuthu missing the opportunity was a major loss for Rajinikanth. Some believe he could have delivered a unique mass portrayal for the superstar.

Ashwath Marimuthu still hopes to revive the script in the future with either Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan. Whether this collaboration will materialise remains uncertain, but the possibility has already generated strong curiosity among fans.
