Suriya’s Best Comeback Chance Ruined by Ajith

After the disappointment of Kanguva at the box office, Suriya’s fans were eagerly awaiting his comeback with Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj.

The film had completed shooting by November, and its teaser and posters generated excitement. Initially, Retro was set for a Pongal release, a prime time for box office success during the festive season.

However, the release of Ajith’s Vidaamuyarchi for Pongal forced the Retro team to push the film’s release to summer 2025.

This delay deprived Suriya of the opportunity to capitalize on the festival advantage, which could have helped the film achieve a strong opening and a successful comeback.

The last-minute postponement of Vidaamuyarchi has also impacted other films, like Vikram’s Veera Dheera Sooran and Ajith’s other film Good Bad Ugly, causing a ripple effect in the industry.

If Vidaamuyarchi had announced its delay earlier, Retro could have planned for a Pongal release.

The reason behind Vidaamuyarchi’s delay lies in issues between Lyca Productions and Paramount Pictures. After comparisons between Vidaamuyarchi and the Hollywood film Breakdown, it was revealed that the remake rights were not secured.

Paramount Pictures is reportedly demanding a high fee for the rights, and Lyca Productions is struggling to meet the financial demands. The release date now depends on how these negotiations unfold.
