Kollywood had a strong start in 2025 with February releases like Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dragon and Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi. Several big films followed and sustained the momentum.
However, 2026 has opened on a dull note for the Tamil box office. So far, except for Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi during Pongal, no major release has created excitement.
The upcoming summer season also looks unusually empty. Traditionally, summer holidays boost collections with big star releases.
In comparison, other industries appear well prepared. Bollywood has Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Bhooth Bangla lined up.
Tollywood is gearing up with Ram Charan’s Peddi and Ustaad Bhagat Singh. The Kannada industry has Yash’s Toxic, while Malayalam cinema plans Drishyam 3 and Patriot.
Meanwhile, Kollywood does not have a confirmed big release for the peak summer window. This gap has raised concerns among trade circles.
Suriya’s Karuppu and Dhanush’s Kara are scheduled for April. However, reports suggest both films may get postponed due to the Tamil Nadu state elections.
Trackers say elections could impact release plans and promotions. As a result, producers may avoid taking risks during this sensitive period.
Trade experts also point to declining theatre footfall across Tamil Nadu. The re release of Mankatha has been the only notable draw so far this year.
The weak summer lineup may affect theatre owners badly. Many depend heavily on big holiday releases to sustain revenue.
Now, all eyes are on Karuppu and Kara. If at least one of them arrives on schedule and performs well, it could offer much needed relief to the Tamil box office.
