SIM-Free Internet in India! But How Affordable?

BSNL has officially unveiled its 5G service brand — Q-5G, short for Quantum 5G. The state-run telecom operator announced the name via social media, along with the launch of its Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in select circles.

The highlight? It delivers high-speed internet without needing a SIM or cables — a first-of-its-kind move in India’s telecom space.

Initially aimed at businesses and enterprises, Q-5G FWA offers data-only services. There is no support for voice calls.

The base plan starts at 999 per month, offering wireless internet powered by indigenous technology. BSNL calls it the future of connectivity — combining power, speed, and flexibility.

But how affordable is it for the average Indian household?

At 999 a month, the yearly cost is around 12,000. This may be manageable for urban families with dual incomes. However, for many middle-class users in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, it’s a significant amount — especially when more affordable alternatives exist.

Today, players like JioFiber and Airtel Xstream offer broadband plans starting from 499 to 799 per month. Many of these include OTT app bundles and voice calling.

In contrast, BSNL’s Q-5G offers only data, with no entertainment perks or call support. That makes it less value-packed for regular home users unless its speed and reliability clearly outperform competitors.

Also, BSNL hasn’t yet revealed hardware or installation charges — factors that could further impact affordability.

That said, Q-5G is a bold and much-needed innovation. But for it to truly reach the masses, BSNL must introduce lower-priced plans aimed at households, not just businesses.

If plans under Rs. 600 arrive soon, Q-5G could genuinely shake up the market. Until then, it’s promising — but not yet middle-class-friendly.
