A recent study conducted by the Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF), a non-profit startup, has highlighted the alarming prevalence of cybercrime in India over the past three years. The research identifies the top 10 districts where a significant 80% of cybercrime cases have been reported.
Bharatpur tops the list for cybercrime in India at 18%, followed by Mathura at 12% due to high financial transactions. Nuh, near Delhi, ranks third with 11% of cybercrime cases, and Deoghar follows closely with 10%.
Jamtara, known for online fraud, holds the fifth position with 9.6%. Gurugram, a corporate hub, records 8.1% cybercrimes. Alwar in Rajasthan has 5.1% of cases, while Bokaro in Jharkhand surprisingly has 2.4%.
Karnatand in Dhanbad coal district and Giridih in Jharkhand report 2.3% of cybercrimes, indicating a growing trend in these areas.
Apart from the widespread geographical distribution of these crimes, it is worth noting that crimes related to UPI have seen the most significant increase. Around 47.25% of reported crimes are related to UPI, followed by debit and credit card frauds and sim swap frauds, occupying the second place with 11.27% of the total.
Furthermore, specific types of crimes seem to favor particular regions. Rajasthan has witnessed a surge in cybercrimes, including sextortion, OLX fraud, customer care scams, OTP frauds, KYC frauds, electricity bill deceptions, and KBC scams. Jharkhand has seen incidents of harassment through apps, gift frauds, matrimonial scams, electricity bill frauds, job, and investment frauds.
Delhi and the NCR region have emerged as hubs for fake links, OTP scams, social engineering schemes, and debit/credit card frauds, with Bihar also witnessing a rise in cyber fraud incidents that mirror the trends seen in the capital.
