India is witnessing a 5G revolution as the leading telecom operators are rolling out their next-generation services in select cities. According to a recent report by OpenSignal, a global mobile analytics company, Jio tops the 5G download speeds in India, while Airtel leads in upload speeds and other aspects of user experience.
The report, based on data collected from june 1 to November 29, 2023, shows that Jio had a median 5G download speed of 506.25 Mbps in Kolkata, the highest among all the cities where 5G is available. Airtel, on the other hand, had a median 5G upload speed of 68.89 Mbps in Delhi, the highest among all the operators. Airtel also scored better than Jio in terms of gaming experience, video experience, and voice app experience on 5G.
The data plans offered by Jio and Airtel for 5G are similar to their existing 4G plans, with no extra charges for accessing 5G. Jio has a “welcome offer” for its invited customers, who can get unlimited 5G data with up to 1 Gbps speeds.
Airtel has announced that its postpaid customers and prepaid customers with a data plan of Rs. 239 and above can avail of its “Airtel 5G Plus” service with no data cap.
However, according to OpenSignal, the median 5G download speed across all the cities where it is available was 233.67 Mbps, while the median upload speed was 36.67 Mbps.
