If you’re still using Google Play Movies & TV on your smart TV then this news is for you. Google is going to discontinue its services for the Google Play Movies & TV app on Android TVs. The app will be killed off within a week for Android TVs. Google wants to push YouTube as its primary platform for videos and content on smart TVs.
Whenever there is an overlapping functionality between apps, the company aims to kill one to push the more prominent one. This is exactly how Google Play Music was killed off in 2020. But if you’re wondering what will happen to your purchased content on the platform, Google has you covered.
The purchased or rented titles will still be available on the devices through the shop tab. The same content can also be accessed through the web with your Google account. Coming January 17, the app will not be available on your smart TVs.
Google has been shutting down its services quite often these days and it can get frustrating for users to switch from one platform used to another. The company similarly killed Google Duo earlier, its video conferencing app.
