IoT-based technology is being used by Indian Railways to address the problem of filthy and odorous train restrooms. The project has been awarded to Viliso Technologies, a startup based in Mumbai. It will first be tested in a limited number of coaches.
Sensing-enabled smart devices are being developed to identify volatile chemicals and molecules in the air and detect unpleasant odours in train restrooms.
The analysis of this data is delivered to a central centre, where it prompts automatic actions like notifying cleaning personnel for sanitation, allowing for quicker intervention and improved odour management.
Better smell management and faster intervention are made possible by automated reactions, such as notifying sanitation staff to clean. IoT-based products from Viliso Technologies include Gandhvedh, a toilet odour, temperature, humidity, and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) sensor.
It is unknown to the Indian Railways whether Gandhvedh is the particular product for monitoring and detecting odours in trains and station restrooms.
