In a verdict that went against the biggest search engine company i.e. Google, developers rejoiced with the jury’s decision in San Francisco.
Epic Games has sued Google for turning its Play Store and billing service into an illegal monopoly. The three-year-long legal battle ended with the verdict being in Epic Games’ favour, though the details have not been made public.
Google has tied its Play Store with its payment service, charging commissions as high as 30 per cent. Given Android being the major mobile OS worldwide and Play Store being the leading app store, developers had no option but to succumb to Google’s monopoly.
This is not the first time that Google has been sued for misusing its dominant position, especially in the Android market. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) imposed a hefty penalty of Rs 1,338 crores on Google for doing the same in India last October.
This verdict will empower developers to choose a billing system that aligns with their needs rather than the tech giants. There are over 200,000 Indian developers on the Play Store. If Google allows third-party payment modes for in-app purchases, it will reduce the monopoly that Google has over everything related to Android.
