Is Twitter Too Boring for Indians?

Celebrating its one-year anniversary, Meta recently announced that Threads has reached 175 million monthly active users, with India being one of the most vibrant regions on the platform.

Indian users have embraced Threads with enthusiasm, creating over 50 million topic tags to date. Popular tags include film, TV, OTT content, celebrity discussions, and sports, reflecting the diverse interests of Indian users. Specific topics like #GunturKaaram, #Kalki2898AD, #HouseofDragon, and #KotaFactoryS3 have generated significant buzz, showcasing the platform’s relevance to current pop culture trends.

Cricket remains a dominant subject on Threads, with the T20 Cricket World Cup, Indian Premier League, and Women’s Premier League 2024 among the most discussed events. This sports-centric engagement highlights the platform’s ability to capture the excitement and passion of Indian cricket fans.

Unique to the Indian Threads community is a higher propensity to mention other users in posts and a preference for video content over the global average. Photos also play a crucial role, with one in four posts featuring at least one picture. This visual-centric approach makes Threads a dynamic and engaging platform for its users.

Threads’ continuous innovation drives its growing popularity. In June, it launched its API, enabling developers to create new experiences around the platform. Additionally, the rollout of a fact-checking program in May aims to combat misinformation, reinforcing Threads’ commitment to a trustworthy social media environment.
