Air India Faces Backlash Over Flight Delays
Air India is under fire from its international passengers after repeated last-minute cancellations and delays, particularly on overseas routes. These incidents are no longer seen as minor issues but as serious disruptions that are damaging the airline’s reputation and, by extension, the image of India.
Technical Issues Disrupt International Flights
One Delhi to Milan flight was cancelled due to a technical fault discovered on a Boeing 787. In another instance, a Delhi to Washington DC flight was stopped in Vienna and later cancelled following a mechanical problem during refuelling. In both cases, affected travellers reported poor communication and a lack of effective alternatives.
Frustration Shared by Loyal Flyers
Passengers have taken to social media to express their anger. One Gold status flyer shared on Reddit how their Air India flight to Paris was abruptly cancelled. They received no phone call or proper notification—just an alert stating the flight was off. The app did not allow rebooking, and customer support offered only a refund or an earlier flight with a layover. They had to pay extra for hotels and were not provided the option to fly with a different airline.
Loyalty Status Offers No Assurance
Despite holding Gold status, the passenger felt neglected and said they were treated like any other customer. The experience was frustrating enough for them to vow never to fly with Air India again. They also mentioned warning friends and family to avoid the airline altogether.
Damaging to India’s Global Image
These repeated complaints are taking a toll on Air India’s international standing. As the national carrier, the airline represents the country on a global stage. When it fails to deliver basic service, it reflects poorly on India as a whole. If Air India aims to expand its global presence, it must start by restoring confidence among its loyal travellers.
