Air India SFO-Delhi Flight Scare: Rescue Launched

An Air India flight from San Francisco to Delhi was diverted to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on November 2, 2025, after a suspected technical issue mid-flight. The Boeing 777, operating as Flight AI174, carried 245 people and landed safely at Chinggis Khaan International Airport as a precaution.

Emergency Landing and Coordination

After the diversion, Air India worked closely with Mongolian aviation authorities and the Indian Embassy to support passengers. The airline arranged hotel stays, meals, and updates throughout the delay. Air India said passenger and crew safety remains its top priority.

Relief Flight Sent from Delhi

To bring passengers home, the airline sent a relief flight, AI183, from Delhi on November 4 using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It is scheduled to return on November 5 with all stranded passengers. The diverted Boeing 777 remains in Mongolia for inspection and clearance.

Past Diversions on Long Routes

Air India has faced similar situations before. In 2023, a San Francisco flight was diverted to Magadan, Russia, due to an engine issue. Another diversion to Krasnoyarsk in 2024 highlighted the risks of long-haul flights over remote regions.
