Can Air India’s New Royal Lounge Attract Premium US Flyers?

Air India has expanded its premium airport services globally with the launch of its first-ever Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco International Airport. The new lounge is located near Gate A1 in the International Terminal and will officially begin operations on May 23, 2026.

The launch marks another important step in Air India’s ongoing transformation strategy. The airline has been focusing on improving passenger comfort, enhancing service quality, and strengthening the international travel experience across its network.

North America continues to remain one of the most important markets for Air India. The carrier is steadily expanding its long-haul operations while improving connectivity between India and the United States.

Spread across 3,300 square feet, the Maharaja Lounge can accommodate up to 80 guests at a time. Access will be available to First and Business Class passengers along with Platinum and Gold members of the Maharaja Club loyalty programme.

The lounge also includes a separate private section exclusively designed for First Class travellers. The dedicated space is expected to offer a quieter and more personalised premium experience for passengers.

Designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates, the lounge combines modern luxury with subtle Indian-inspired interiors. The overall design aims to create a premium environment while reflecting elements of Indian culture and hospitality.

One of the key attractions inside the lounge is “The Aviator’s Bar.” The facility also features social seating areas, dining spaces, live cooking stations, and comfortable seating arrangements with views of the airport tarmac.

The new lounge also gives Air India an opportunity to showcase Indian culture to international travellers visiting the United States. Tourists and passengers using the facility may get a glimpse of India’s hospitality and vibrant design aesthetics through the overall lounge experience.

However, one major factor that could influence the lounge’s popularity is pricing. Industry observers believe the response will largely depend on how affordable and accessible the premium experience is for travellers in the United States.

If the pricing remains moderate, the lounge could attract a wider audience. However, expensive access costs may limit the number of passengers who regularly choose the facility.
