A mother from California, Shayanne Wright, has accused British Airways of violating her privacy during a red-eye flight in June. She claims a flight attendant lifted her nursing cover without permission while she was breastfeeding her 7-month-old daughter.
Flight Attendant Lifted Nursing Cover Without Consent
Wright, a Costa Mesa-based business owner and city commissioner, was travelling alone with her infant. She says a crew member tapped her repeatedly on the thigh and then pulled off her nursing cover, waking her baby in the process. The attendant allegedly did not apologise and simply asked if she wanted her meal.
Wright Describes the Experience as Invasive
The mother described the incident as “physically invasive” and claimed there were more unwanted touches. She says the staff also tried to fasten her seatbelt without consent. Wright believes this behaviour crossed the line of professionalism and personal space.
British Airways Responds with Gift Cards, Not Apology
While British Airways confirmed they received her complaint, Wright says the airline responded with gift cards instead of an official apology. She had hoped the incident would lead to staff sensitivity training.
Reddit Post Goes Viral and Sparks Discussion
Wright shared her experience on Reddit’s r/breastfeeding forum. The post quickly went viral, gathering over 600,000 views. She later labelled the event as sexual harassment, highlighting the discomfort and lack of boundaries she felt.
Breastfeeding Protections and Need for Policy Change
Both U.S. and U.K. laws support the rights of breastfeeding mothers. However, Wright believes airlines must do more to ensure accountability. Her story underlines the importance of staff training and clear policies that respect passenger dignity and safety.
