A British Airways flight from London to Sharm El Sheikh was forced to make an emergency landing in Venice after several passengers and crew members fell ill mid-air.
Flight Turns Chaotic After Takeoff
According to passenger Melanie Wells, 61, the trouble began even before takeoff. She described the cabin as “supersonically hot” and said she developed a severe headache. Others appeared visibly uncomfortable.
Once airborne, the situation worsened. Multiple passengers and flight attendants reportedly collapsed, causing panic on board.
Emergency Landing in Venice
Wells recalled seeing a mother’s eyes roll back as crew members rushed through the aisles, some also fainting. The aircraft diverted to Venice, where it was met by ambulances, fire trucks, and hazmat teams in full protective gear.
All passengers and crew were medically checked for possible fume exposure. However, the exact cause of the incident remains unknown.
British Airways later confirmed the emergency landing was a precautionary move due to a “technical issue.”
Delays and Compensation Frustrate Flyers
The incident led to delays of nearly 40 hours for some passengers. Many were rerouted via London to their final destinations.
While the airline apologised and offered approximately $3,000 in compensation, Wells said she incurred additional expenses that were not reimbursed. She has since filed a formal complaint.
Questions Raised Over Customer Care
Though British Airways acted quickly to ensure safety, passengers claim communication and support fell short. This incident highlights the need for greater transparency and better customer care during in-flight emergencies.
