A recent post on a travel forum revealed the frustration of a first-time solo traveler caught in a confusing check-in process caused by poor coordination between airlines.
The traveler booked a multi-leg journey beginning in London, with connections in Phoenix and a final stop in John Wayne, California. While the booking was managed by British Airways, the domestic leg was operated by American Airlines.
Despite trying to check in online, the traveler ran into a frustrating digital loop. The British Airways app displayed only a vague “not available” message. Attempting the American Airlines app resulted in redirection back to British Airways, leaving the traveler stuck with no way to obtain a boarding pass.
With just hours before departure, the situation was understandably stressful. Eventually, a suggestion from a fellow traveler led them to the British Airways check-in counter, where staff were able to issue all boarding passes, including the one for the American Airlines leg. Thankfully, the staff were helpful and even tried to secure a more comfortable seat.
However, this case reflects a deeper issue that continues to affect codeshare flights: a lack of integration between partner airlines’ systems.
For a major airline like British Airways to leave passengers guessing which app to use, and then provide no useful guidance when that fails, is simply unacceptable.
This is not an isolated incident. Others have faced similar problems when trying to navigate between codeshare partners. The experience highlights how digital systems, while convenient when they work, can fall apart without proper support and communication.
For a first-time flyer, this kind of avoidable confusion can sour the entire travel experience.
Airlines must take more responsibility for ensuring their systems are clear, functional and passenger friendly, especially when partnerships complicate the journey.
