$1700 for Free Switch? Delta’s Wild Price Swings

A recent passenger account has put Delta Airlines under the spotlight for its confusing handling of itinerary changes. Travellers are frustrated as similar requests often get very different price quotes.

Different Outcomes for Same Request

The passenger had booked a return trip from Europe to the United States but extended the trip to visit the United Kingdom. Their friend switched the departure city to Glasgow for free after a quick call with an agent.

Shockingly High Fare Quote

When the same request was made by this passenger, Delta first quoted over $1200. In a follow-up call, the fare was raised to $1700, causing stress for the traveller who could not afford the extra cost.

Penalties for Skipping First Leg

The airline warned that skipping the first leg and arranging separate transport would trigger penalties of more than $800. This left the traveller feeling trapped by a system that seemed unfair.

Opaque Pricing and Frustrated Passengers

The incident highlights how inconsistent airline pricing can be. Two customers with nearly identical requests received completely different quotes, creating confusion and hardship for ordinary passengers.

Resolution After Multiple Calls

After several calls, the passenger finally reached a ticketing specialist who processed the change for around $250, similar to buying a new ticket. The experience showed how arbitrary and stressful the system can feel.
