Charger Sparks Fire Scare in KLM Flight

KLM Flight KL792 from São Paulo to Amsterdam experienced a mid-air fire scare when a portable charger began leaking and filling the cabin with smoke. The incident occurred about four hours before landing, creating concern among passengers before the source was traced to a lithium-ion battery inside the charger.

The crew responded swiftly, using onboard fire extinguishers to put out the flames before the situation could worsen. Passengers said the attendants acted quickly and professionally, containing the fire and restoring calm. Despite the smoke, the flight continued as planned and landed safely in Amsterdam without diversion.

Lithium Battery Safety Risks

Lithium-ion batteries in portable chargers are banned in checked luggage because they can overheat, leak, or catch fire. Airlines require them to be stored in carry-on baggage so that any malfunction can be dealt with immediately. This incident reinforces the importance of following airline safety rules for electronic devices.

Investigation Underway

KLM has notified the Dutch Safety Board and is assisting with an investigation into the malfunction. The airline’s response showed a high level of preparedness, ensuring passenger safety despite the scare.

Past KLM Safety Incident

This case also follows another KLM safety event in May 2025 when Flight KL877 returned to Amsterdam after an engine-related fire risk was detected. While unrelated to the lithium battery issue, it highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and strong emergency procedures in aviation.
