Lufthansa has announced a major upgrade to the Business Class cabins of its Airbus A380 fleet. You will soon see new seats, better privacy, and more comfort on the airline’s largest long-haul aircraft.
Fleet renewal programme
This upgrade is part of the most extensive fleet renewal programme in the airline’s history. You can expect changes across the entire A380 fleet, with all eight aircraft set for a complete Business Class refit.
Retrofit details
All eight A380 aircraft will be retrofitted with new premium Business Class seats. The programme begins in early February at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden.
First aircraft for upgrade
The first aircraft scheduled for the upgrade is the A380 registered “Mike-Charly”. You will likely see this aircraft return to service before the others once testing and certification are complete.
New Business Class seats
The new seats are supplied by manufacturer Thompson. You will get direct aisle access, a seat width of 58 cm, a fully flat bed of at least two metres, Bluetooth connectivity, and adjustable partitions for privacy.
Faster approval process
Lufthansa already has certification for this cabin layout. This allows the airline to introduce the new product quickly, without a long approval process delaying the rollout.
Cabin layout after upgrade
Once completed, each A380 will have 68 Business Class seats. You will also find eight First Class seats, 52 Premium Economy seats, and 371 Economy seats on every aircraft.
Largest long-haul aircraft
In short, the A380 will remain Lufthansa’s largest long-haul aircraft. Routine maintenance checks will also take place during the retrofit period to ensure safety and performance.
Return to service timeline
The first upgraded aircraft is expected to return to Munich and enter service in April. You can expect the full fleet retrofit to finish by mid-2027.
Focus on premium travel
This move shows a strong focus on product quality. You will see Lufthansa improving its premium long-haul offering as passenger expectations in Business Class continue to rise.
