Major Safety Crisis: Airlines’ All Flights Shut

Nok Air has been ordered to suspend all international flights after a directive from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). As reported by the Bangkok Post, the regulator cited repeated safety incidents and staffing concerns in a letter to chief executive officer Wutthiphum Jurangkool on August 25, 2025.

Suspension and Operations Impact

The budget airline mainly serves domestic routes but had a small international network with five destinations, three in China and two in India. These flights had already been halted in June 2025 due to off-season demand. The regulator’s order now makes resumption conditional on corrective measures.

Safety Incidents Under Scrutiny

Between 2023 and 2025, CAAT noted several serious incidents such as inflight engine shutdowns, runway excursions, hard landings, and tail strikes. The unresolved engine shutdown cases were flagged as especially critical. Nok Air stated its CEO is preparing a reply and expects the suspension could be lifted within a month.

Staff Exodus and Morale Issues

Reports by The Nation Thailand revealed that pilots, flight instructors, and aviation inspectors have resigned in large numbers in recent months. This raised concerns about morale among staff and the airline’s overall safety culture.

Timing with ICAO Audit

The suspension coincides with an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety audit of Thailand’s aviation sector, scheduled between August 27 and September 8, 2025. Thailand had only recently regained FAA Category 1 safety status, allowing airlines to operate flights to the United States after nearly a decade under Category 2.

Nok Air’s Profile

Founded in 2004, Nok Air operates 14 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It serves 18 domestic destinations from hubs in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. The suspension now casts a shadow on its operations and international prospects.
