A frequent flyer recently shared a string of disappointing experiences with United Airlines, raising concerns about the airline’s inflight service quality, especially in its premium Polaris class.
After switching from Delta, where they held top-tier status and consistently enjoyed respectful and attentive service, the traveler expected comparable treatment on United’s premium routes. Instead, they encountered a pattern of dismissive and hostile behavior from flight attendants.
On four recent flights, including three in Polaris business class and one in economy, the traveler was repeatedly treated with coldness and disdain. During one Polaris award redemption, the crew appeared visibly annoyed to serve them, creating the impression that passengers using miles were second-class customers. Subsequent flights as a paying business traveler did not fare better.
Between Newark and South America, the crew seemed equally disinterested in all business passengers except two Global Services members. Conversations with fellow frequent flyers revealed that such treatment was not an isolated incident.
Even in economy, the experience was marred by unnecessary gate agent hostility. A takeout bag from the airport sparked a confrontation, with the agent insisting the passenger consolidate it with their other carry-on items. The passenger was only allowed to board after their elite 1K status was confirmed.
This recurring pattern of poor treatment is alarming, especially in a class of service marketed as premium. While the Polaris lounges continue to offer a pleasant ground experience, the inflight service appears inconsistent and, at times, outright unfriendly.
For a traveler accustomed to high standards across multiple airlines, United’s lack of courtesy and professionalism in the skies is a disappointing contrast. If this is not a streak of bad luck, it reflects poorly on the airline’s commitment to customer care.
