A new immigration bill introduced on Wednesday by Eli Crane is stirring debate around the H-1B visa program. The proposal, backed by several House Republicans, calls for a three-year pause on issuing new H-1B visas to allow time for a major overhaul of the system.
The bill aims to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. It goes beyond just a temporary freeze. It proposes ending programs like OPT and H-4 work permits, and also stopping green card status adjustments during the pause. One of the most controversial parts is the plan to require current H-1B visa holders to leave the United States while the reset is carried out.
The list of co-sponsors includes Brian Babin, Brandon Gill, Paul Gosar, Wesley Hunt, Tom McClintock, Keith Self, and Andy Ogles.
The proposal has already triggered strong reactions online. One anti H1B social media user criticized the effort, claiming such bills rarely move forward because lawmakers are unlikely to bring them to a vote.
For now, the bill is only at the introduction stage. Whether it gains enough support to move further remains to be seen.
