93 Dead: Deadliest Wildfire In U.S.

A devastating wildfire struck Maui’s Lahaina town, resulting in 93 reported deaths, making it the deadliest wildfire in over a century in the United States. The toll is expected to rise as search efforts continue.

The tragedy surpassed the 2018 California Camp Fire and a 1918 Minnesota blaze in fatalities. The wildfire’s toll, greater than a 1960 tsunami, becomes the deadliest recent disaster in Hawaii.

The fire’s cause is uncertain, but fallen power lines in strong winds are suspected culprits. Despite alert systems, many residents have not received warnings due to power outages.

The fire’s aftermath led to power outages, contaminated tap water, and substantial property damage. The fire has been extinguished, but the unrest persists, leading to entry restrictions for returning residents.

With thousands of structures damaged, rebuilding costs are estimated at $5.52 billion.

The devastation caused by the Lahaina fire:

1. 2,207 structures destroyed
2. 86% of residential buildings exposed to the fire
3. 2,170 acres burned
4. 51,700 sq feet of shelter are estimated to be needed
5. 4,500 people estimated to need shelter
