Airlines Check Worse Than CBP for US Visa Holders?

You’d think the toughest part of immigrating to the US is clearing Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the airport, especially under the current climate. But for one EB‑1 visa holder, the real headache began before even boarding the flight.

Sharing their experience on social media, the person detailed their first-time entry through JFK. Surprisingly, the US immigration check was a breeze, causing no delays. Just a quick stamp, a couple of simple questions, and they were done in 15 minutes.

But the real stress came earlier—at the boarding gate in Zurich. There, an airline agent from Swiss Air treated the couple as if he had an unfulfilled dream of becoming an immigration officer.

The agent aggressively questioned the visa annotation on the dependent spouse’s passport and demanded a marriage certificate. All because the couple had different last names.

His tone was reportedly harsh, and had they not carried the certificate, they could’ve been denied boarding. This, despite the US consulate never requiring the document at the interview stage.

And this isn’t an isolated story. Airlines are under pressure to verify visa documents because they’re fined for flying ineligible passengers. But their ground staff often lack training and act on half-baked assumptions.

Many travelers have reported being wrongly challenged or even denied boarding, especially dependents and first-time entrants.

So while CBP has its share of horror stories, in this case, it wasn’t the American officers but the foreign airline that almost turned a smooth journey into a nightmare.
