Mohammad Kumel Shaik, a 26-year-old student from Kadapa, reportedly passed away on May 7 in San Francisco. The incident happened just a day after he celebrated his graduation from Golden Gate University.
According to a GoFundMe campaign started by his friend Ravi Teja Nannapaneni, Kumel suffered a cardiac arrest in his sleep soon after attending his graduation ceremony. The fundraiser described the graduation day as one of the happiest moments of his life.
Friends remembered Kumel as a hardworking and humble student who moved to America with big dreams. They said he hoped to build a better future and support his family back home in India through his education and career.
The fundraiser also mentioned that Kumel’s family is now facing emotional and financial difficulties while trying to bring his body back to India. Donations from the campaign are expected to support repatriation expenses, funeral arrangements, and pending educational loans.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the emotional and financial challenges faced by Indian students studying abroad. The rising number of cardiac arrest cases among young people has also raised concerns about stress, isolation, and lifestyle pressures faced while living away from home.
