In a significant development, Chintan Anjaria, an Indian national and owner of a marketing company, has pleaded guilty to an extensive healthcare fraud totaling $11.5 million. Anjaria admitted his guilt on October 31 before US District Judge Michael E. Farbiarz in Newark federal court. He faced charges of conspiracy to violate the Federal Anti-Kickback statute and conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. Court documents revealed Anjaria’s involvement in a kickback and bribery scheme with orthotic brace supply companies, telemedicine firms, and testing laboratories. This elaborate scheme led to false claims being submitted to Medicare, exploiting beneficiaries regardless of medical necessity.
A similar case previously involved Dr. Ranjan Rajbanshi, a 46-year-old Indian-origin dentist residing in the United States. Dr. Rajbanshi pleaded guilty to stealing $500,000 in COVID-19 relief funds over a two-year period.
These cases underscore the challenges faced in ensuring the integrity of healthcare systems, with authorities working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.
Anjaria’s sentencing is scheduled for March 12.
