Another Indian Origin Politician Ready to Replace Sunak

The UK has seen its fair share of political turmoils in recent years. From Brexit to PMs resigning mid-term to barely inching out of recession this year, the nation is slowly trying to find stability. And so is the Conservative Party. After facing a disastrous defeat in this year’s general election, the Tories are looking for a new leader after former PM Rishi Sunak resigned from its position.

Well, it turns out there could be a one-in and one-out policy for Indian-origin people at the helm of the Conservative party as another British Indian is in contention to succeed Sunak. Priti Patel, 52, will compete with five of her fellow Tory ministers to determine the next leader of the opposition.

While it may be another good news for the Indian community, they shouldn’t count their eggs before they are hatched as there are still multiple rounds of voting left. Patel brings the experience of being a former home secretary under former PM Boris Johnson. However, her competitors are in the same boat as all of them are ex-cabinet ministers.

As the Conservatives are recovering from its worst loss in history, would a new British Indian leader be able to revive the party? Or will the Tories be skeptical even to elect another Indian at the top? It all hangs in the balance as the UK parliament session resumes again after its summer break.
