AP Student Killed in Brutal Bike Accident in NY

Tragically, an Indian student, Shri Belem Atchyuth from Andhra Pradesh, died in a motorcycle accident in New York. He was a student at the State University of New York (SUNY).

Riding a motorcycle is undeniably dangerous. Motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in crashes and four times more likely to get injured compared to other drivers.

It is sad that an Indian student was killed in a bike accident. In the U.S., bikes are not as common as they are in India due to winter and other adverse weather conditions, leading to very low bike usage in the country.

Additionally, not many people can afford bikes as they are expensive, making it rare for Indian students to own bikes in the U.S. We are not sure if it was his bike or a bike owned by someone else that hit him.

In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), The Consulate General of India in New York expressed condolences, stating, “Saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Shri Belem Atchyuth, a student at SUNY who met with a bike accident and passed away yesterday evening; our deepest condolences to the family.”

The Consulate also mentioned they are coordinating with his family and local agencies to provide all necessary assistance, including repatriating his remains to India.

This incident adds to a recent rise in deaths among Indian-origin students in the US.
