Are H1Bs Creating Jobs or Killing Them?

Some Americans think that if Trump genuinely cared about U.S. jobs, he would have already cut H1B visas. The argument is straightforward: over a million high-paying positions have been given to foreign workers, so how does that help local talent?

However, this perspective overlooks an important detail—companies don’t hire H1B workers out of goodwill. They do it because they struggle to find enough qualified candidates quickly and at the scale they need.

Sure, there are issues within the system. Nobody disputes that. But painting all H1B workers with the same brush ignores the fact that many of them are filling roles that might otherwise remain vacant—or worse, be outsourced.

It’s also crucial to remember that these aren’t jobs snatched away from anyone. These are positions earned through years of education in the U.S., student loans, and a highly competitive visa process.

If the goal is to protect jobs, slashing visas won’t bridge the gap. The real focus should be on enhancing domestic talent pipelines, rather than making skilled immigrants easy scapegoats.

Because the reality is—when companies hire from around the globe, it’s not out of desire. It’s out of necessity. And the H1B debate often overlooks this uncomfortable truth.
