B1/B2 Rejection: Indian Student’s UAE Address Flagged?

An Indian medical graduate recently faced a B1/B2 visa rejection, possibly linked to his UAE residence status. Despite having a US education background, his application was denied, raising concerns about how location and residency impact visa decisions.

The 27 year old completed his medical studies in Georgia in 2023. Like many international graduates, he cleared the required exams and is currently waiting for certification from ECFMG to move forward in his medical career.

His primary reason for visiting the United States was to attend medical observerships. These programmes are important for gaining practical exposure and securing recommendation letters, which play a key role in future career opportunities.

In July 2025, he applied for a B1/B2 visa and attended an interview at the US consulate in Hyderabad. He explained his purpose clearly and presented an invitation letter from a US doctor to support his application.

However, the situation changed when the visa officer noticed that he was residing in the UAE while attending the interview in India. This raised questions about his residency status and long term plans.

He clarified that his family had recently purchased a home in India and planned to settle there. Still, the explanation may not have been convincing enough, as his relocation appeared recent and not fully established.

Being unmarried and lacking strong ties to India may have further impacted the officer’s decision. As a result, his visa application was rejected immediately after the interview process.

Eight months later, the candidate is at a crucial stage where observerships are necessary. Although he can arrange fresh invitation letters, he remains concerned about facing another rejection.

With stricter scrutiny on US visa applications, especially B1/B2 categories, applicants are being assessed more carefully. Many suggest that attending the interview in the UAE might be a better option given his residency.

However, dual residency can create confusion and raise concerns for visa officers. Even though previous rejections may still be flagged, experts believe applying from the UAE could improve his chances.
