Bad News For Indians Awaiting GCs

The wait for Indians seeking permanent residency in the US, particularly in the employment-based 2 and 3 categories, is growing increasingly lengthy and concerning.

Currently, a staggering 1.1 million Indians are in the green card queue, with the majority falling under these two categories. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has made it clear that they will not accept new EB-2 or EB-3 I-485 applications from India for fiscal year 2024 and beyond.

The heart of the issue lies in the inadequate number of visas allocated to employment-based categories, with only 140,000 available annually. This number falls far short of the demand in an economy as vast as the United States. Without prompt action, there is a real risk of losing valuable talent to other countries.

It is emphasized that unless the US Congress intervenes and addresses this supply-demand imbalance, the green card backlog for Indians will persist.
