Many Indian students want to go abroad for higher education. Despite it being an expensive venture, Indian parents send their children in hopes of a better life for their children. However, now aspiring students will have to meet sufficient financial requirements if they want to study at a foreign university.
Under a new UK policy, International students must show evidence of sufficient funds to support themselves during their studies before applying for student visas. This amount has risen to £1,483 (~ ₹1.64L) in London and £1,136 (~ ₹1.26L) in other British cities. This new policy will take effect from January 2, 2025, posing difficulties for Indian immigrant students.
With Canada imposing more curbs for immigrants amid population increase and high housing prices, this is another shock to the Indian diaspora. Canada is denying Indian Visas in record numbers, and this new policy might achieve the same in the UK. Moreover, they will have to wait for the results of the upcoming US elections to see how the immigration policy is shaped in the States.
It seems 2025 will be an uncertain time for the Indian diaspora amid increased cost of living and elections in the US and Canada.
