Air India is attempting to rebrand itself as a global airline, but experiences like these highlight the significant distance it still needs to cover. A recent flight from Delhi to Frankfurt served as a stark reminder of the disparity between expectations and reality.
A passenger who had booked a premium economy seat well in advance found themselves downgraded when the newer Vistara aircraft—typically assigned to this route—-was replaced by an older Air India plane that lacked a premium economy section altogether.
That was just the start of the issues. A bulkhead seat was chosen for added comfort, but the positioning of the entertainment system’s controller made it far from comfortable. On long-haul flights, even minor inconveniences can accumulate, transforming what should have been a pleasant journey into a test of endurance.
Then came the final disappointment—no gin and tonic available in the economy cabin. Air India recently switched catering vendors, and while this may seem trivial, it’s a significant detail for frequent travelers who depend on small comforts to make long hours in the air more bearable. When a country aims to be the Dubai of the East in terms of connectivity and accessibility such missteps feel like a backward step.
This situation isn’t merely about one unfortunate flight; it’s about the need for consistency. Air India’s aging aircraft has long been a source of frustration, and the airline must make a decision—either upgrade them or retire them.
The airline’s global reputation hangs in the balance, and international travelers may not always recognize that these experiences are exceptions. For many, a single bad flight can be enough to prompt a permanent switch to another airline.
The airline has been making grand promises, but it’s the execution that truly matters. If Air India aspires to compete with the best, it cannot afford to keep letting passengers down. Comfort, relatability, and service should be fundamental priorities—otherwise, those seeking a premium travel experience will take their business elsewhere.
